EPISODE 10

Resource Teacher: Janet Albolera School: Engracia L. Valdomar National High School
Grade/Year Level: Grade 10 Subject Area: Araling Panlipunan

OBSERVE 10.1

Observe one class with the use of observation sheet for greater focus
then analyze my observations with the help of the guide questions.

1.The more senses that are involved, the The teacher used visual aid about the
more and the better learning. topic and utilized technology through
television by a powerpoint presentation
about the sex and gender.
2.Learning is an active process. The teacher encouraged learners to
participate actively by sharing their ideas
and opinions during class discussion.
3.A non-threatening atmosphere The teacher possessed a positive

can feel the conducive environment
towards learning.
4.Emotion has the power to increase The teacher appreciates the ideas and
retention and learning. opinions of her students. She also boosts
the confidence of the learners and
encouraged to speak.
5.Good teaching goes beyond recall of The teacher encourages learners to think

order thinking skills.
6.Learning is meaningful when it is The teacher relates to real-life

7.An integrated teaching approach is far The teacher uses the student-centered
more effective than teaching isolated bits approach in which the focus is on them
of information. and the teacher are just facilitating.

ANALYZE

What is the best method of teaching? Is there such a thing?

- The best teaching method is the student-centered and

collaborative learning. In which learners needs are the focus
during the class discussion. Teachers are just guiding and
facilitating them, this is also a way in which they can develop
many skills. In collaborative learning, in which learners
collaborate in the activities and develop a sense of unity inside
the class.

REFLECT

Reflect on this question.

How do we select the appropriate strategy for our lessons?

- In selecting the appropriate strategy we need to be aware of the
learners needs and know their backgrounds. We as an educator it
is important for us to be aware of every learners circumstances
they’re in. For example, back when I was in high school some of
my classmates need to apply jobs in order to support their
studies and families. Therefore, knowing them or being aware to
every learners needs and background is very important in which
we can understand and consider some factors in the learning
process.

OBSERVE 10.2

Observe a class and answer the following questions.

1. Did the teacher state the learning objectives/intended learning

outcomes (ILOs) at the beginning of the class? Did he/she share
them with the class?How?
- Yes, the teacher states first the objectives/intended learning
outcomes. She set clear expectations or learning outcomes, then
she introduce it to the class. Basically, the objectives she
prepares are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-
bounded. Which will really suit to the learners needs.
2. What teaching-learning activities(TLAs) did he/she use? Did these
TLAs help him/her attain his/her lesson objectives/ILOs? Explain
your answer.
- The teacher used the collaborative work activities in which
learners will work as a group. Wherein, learners are able to work
independently but collaboratively. She also encourage them to
interact or participate actively during the discussion.
3. What assessment task/s did teacher employ? Is/are these aligned
to the lesson objectives ILOs?
- The teacher wasn’t able to present to present the assessment in
the video clip. Through asking questions that was aligned to the
learning outcome or objective is also a way of assessing
learners. In which we can recognized if we meet the objectives
or intended learning outcomes during the discussion.

ANALYZE

1.What are your thoughts about Outcome-Based Teaching and

Learning(OBTL)

- Outcome-based teaching and learning plays an important role in

the learning process of every learner. Wherein the focused is on
their needs and outcomes. It is also a way of determining the
learner’s progress. OBTL helps us to set clear expectations and
attainable learning outcome to foster development in every learner.

REFLECT

Reflect on the use of OBTL

- The use of OBTL is to identify the intended learning outcomes

and aligning it in teaching, learning and assessment to every
learner. It is important that the teaching, learning and
assessment activities are aligned with the stated learning
outcomes. Also, setting clear expectations or intended learning
outcomes which is observable and measurable.
OBSERVE 10.3

Observe a class activity. You shall focus on the questions that the
Resource Teacher asks during the classroom discussion. Write the
questions raised and identify the level of questioning.

Types of Question Examples of Questions that the Resource

Teacher Asked
1.Factual/Convergent The teacher asked the what, who, where and
Close/Low level when questions from the learner. One example
that I’ve heard in the video clip was “ what is
gender equality?”.
2.Divergent/Higher- The teacher asked their opinions or deeper
order/Open- intellectual thought about the “house
ended/Conceptual husband”, mostly it was addressed to boys
inside the class.
a. Evaluation The teacher asked about their idea of sex and
gender.
b. Inference She asked what they can infer about the
“house husband” and most of the wifes are
working abroad.
c. Comparison She asked about what is the difference of a
sex and gender of every people.
d. Application She asked how they can relate and apply their
learning in the real-life scenarios.
e. Problem-solving She let the students to illustrate the
characteristics of each gender through a
collaborative work.
3.Affective She asked what they feel about the gender
equality in our community.

ANALYZE

1. Neil Postman once said: “Children go to school as question

marks and leave school as periods!” Does this have something to
do with the type of questions that teachers ask and the
questioning and reacting techniques that they employ?
- Yes, that quotation have something to do with the type of
questions ask and the reacting technique he/she employ inside
the classroom. That is also one example of effective questioning
for the learners. In which they could develop deeper intellectual
thoughts about that quotation. Also, having effective questioning
may clarify learners understanding and boost they confidence to
participate actively during class discussion.

REFLECT

Reflect on

The importance of using various reacting techniques.

- The importance of using various reacting techniques are to give
appropriate quality responses and following up a student’s
response. It is a good way in having an active interaction in a
class discussion. For example, when we are asking somebody we
do the follow up questions after their response. In which we will
know if learners response it correctly and appropriately.
Show your learning artifacts

Show proofs of learning that you were able to gain in this episode by
interviewing at least two teachers on their thoughts on OBTL.

- The interview was done through the use of technology and

messenger application in mobile phone. I messaged my two

teachers when I was in high school, asking a permission to

conduct a quick interview through chat about their thoughts of

“outcomes-based teaching and learning”. I find out that they have

the same thought about the OBTL, in which its focused is not on

the teacher intends to teach but on what is the outcome from the

learner intended to be. Also, they said that it is important that

the activities or assessment we gave to the learners are aligned

to the learning outcome.
