Field Study 2

Revisit the Infographic/s

A group of more than six hundred teachers was surveyed and asked what teaching
learning problems confront them. Here are their answers put together in a wordle.

Study the wondle below, each word represents an issue or a problem which was reported
by teachers in the field. Which of the words do you recognize as a problem? Draw a CIRCLE
around five words that you have also identified as problems in teaching-learning.

Absenteeism
Financial
Wi-Fi
Bullying
Lack

Participate and Assist

What five problems have you identified from the words that you have encircled? Make a
statement. Write in the space below.

The problems I identified are:

1. Absenteeism is one of the factors that are why the level of understanding of the student is
poor.
2. Some of the students are force to work because they don’t have financials to supports
their studies.
3. As of now, we are experiencing online class and the problem of some of the students is
the limited internet connection that causes poor performance of the students.
4. Bullying is one of the problematic situations in school that is why some of the students
who bullied are afraid to show their potentials and capability.
5. Lack. To be specific, lack of Family support is also affecting the confidence of one’s
student to boost their biggest potential.

Excellent! Let us see how we can assist and learn at the same time.

Suppose, the problem you have spotted is: COMPREHENSION.

FS2 – Episode 3 Page 2

Field Study 2

How can you assist your mentor, after knowing that the learners have difficulty I
comprehension?

Observe and conduct some tests and surveys to address the problem and to know, how many and
who among the students who lack of comprehension and needs assistance?

Make a Choice for your ACTION

A. Conduct a tutorial lesson.

B. Show video lessons to help enhance comprehension.

C. Make a learning task to develop comprehension.

Suppose you chose letter A. Conduct a Tutorial. So you have identified the SOLUTION that
matches the PROBLEM which is difficulty in Comprehension.

The Problem is: The Action is:

Difficulty in
Comprehension of Reading Conduct a Tutorial

The Action is:

1. Target all comprehension of language
2. Teach Vocabulary
3. Teach thinking strategies
4. Have student’s practice reciprocal teaching
5. Directly teach comprehension skills

Can you also choose letter B: Show video lesson as a SOLUTION for the same PROBLEM

The Problem is: The Action is:

Field Study 2

Difficulty in Show Video lessons

Comprehension of Reading

You can also give them another option which is providing videos regarding tips and techniques
about reading with understanding. You can check this link,

What about letter C as a SOLUTION to the same PROBLEM? Why?

The Problem is: The Action is:

Difficulty in Make learning tasks to

Comprehension of improve comprehension

To help struggling students make the critical reading gains they need, consider incorporating this
tips into your everyday instructional plans.

 Offer the right level of scaffolding at the right time

 Provide systematic and cumulative instruction
 Engage in multisensory activities
 Supply at-home resources for parents
 Motivate and reward success

Interesting, isn't it? Now, you can assist your mentor by identifying observed problems in the
class and Suggest actions to be done.

Notice

What have you noticed of the problem identified above? Can there be more than one solution to
the problem? Explain

I noticed that there is more than one solution to the problem and Yes, there are a lot of solutions
on how to address the problem which is difficulty in comprehension. I think that, every teacher
should not only focus on one solution but rather look for a solution that is more effective to the
learning of every student.

A creative and innovative teacher can find one or more than one solution or answer to the same
problem. Each solution matches with the problem. The more solutions identified to choose from,
the better for an action researcher.

Analyze

Let us try to look into the following scenarios in the daily life of a teacher. This scenario might
also be similar to the class you have observed and noticed.

Scenario A: Miss Fely is a grade four teacher in a typical elementary school. She has forty
learners in her class. One half of them cannot classify animals into vertebrates and
invertebrates. She has been repeating the same science lesson for two weeks, yet no
progress was observed. This situation has been bothering Miss Fely.

 Can you identify Miss Fely's problem? The problem is one half of them cannot classify
animals into vertebrates and invertebrates and she has been repeating the same science
lesson for two weeks, yet no progress was observed.
 Can you find a solution to solve her problem? Give your two suggestions.
a) Try other teaching format like build in time to walk around and let the students to
observe.
b) Avoid yes or no questions; let your students to reflect and to think more.
 What solution can solve Miss Fely's problem?
How? I think both suggested solution are effective. Try other teaching format like build
in time to walk around and let the students to observe. Through that way, you are giving
chances to all the students who cannot figure out your topic and I think that observation
outside can help to understand science topics.

Are they matched with the problem?

FS2 – Episode 3 Page 5

Field Study 2

Yes and it is definitely effective

Scenario B: Sir Ryan teaches in a disadvantaged urban community. Most of his learners come
from families that are disrupted, either with single parents or with their guardians
who stand only as parents. They are deprived of the necessary food, clothing and
shelter.

 Can you identify the most probable teaching-leaning problem/s in the class of Sir Ryan?
a. Poor performance of the students because of financial problems
b. It is hard for them to focus on the class because of problems at home
 Can you propose a solution to solve one of the problems that you have identified?

If I could give more support like foods, donations from other teachers, I would, and I will
also tell to the Barangay officials about the problems and ask the embedded programs
they are planning to solve that case. It is very important to solve it because it will affect
the future of the students.

Reflect

After reading the two scenarios given above, how would identifying problematic situations and
finding solutions to these problems help you to become a better teacher?

Explain:

Part of the teacher’s job is to find out each student’s background, their needs and things
they think will affect their development. I think it would be better for a class to run smoothly if
the teacher does a background check from the beginning to find out the needs of each student,
also have assessments, pre and post-test to see the ability of students, learn the learning strategies
that the teacher will use and learn the things they don’t already know that need to be mastered.

Write Action Research Prompts

Using any one example of problems in this activity, answer the AR prompts that follow:

OBSERVE

What problematic situation prevails in the classroom?

FS2 – Episode 3 Page 6

Field Study 2

It is hard for the students to focus on their studies because of financial problems and it affects
their learnings.

REFLECT

What changes do you want to achieve'?

I want my class to be more productive and eager to learn more and explore learnings.

PLAN

What strategies will you use to improve the situation?

Maybe create some activities that the students can also learn, reflect and explore in a way that
they need to be creative but do not need expensive materials.

ACT

What would be the title of your Action Research should you conduct the study?

Poor performance of the students because of financial problems

Add: Solutions/ actions

Set PTA meeting and discuss the problems, ask them their opinions and their suggestions.

Check for Mastery

Here are some problematic situations in the teaching-learning environment as observed

and experienced by the teachers. Match the problems listed in Column A with corresponding
probable solutions in Column B. You may use the letter once, more than once or not at all.

Work on my Artifacts

Your artifact will be an Abstract of a completed Action Research.

I. Title of Action Research:

Improving Reading Comprehension Through the use of Higher Order Thinking Activities
II. Author/s:
Noel R. Dauran
III. Abstract:
The area of focus for my project is improving Reading Comprehension Through the Use
of Higher Order Thinking Skill Activities. Without the solid foundation of reading skill
the researcher feels the children will be struggle hard throughout their schooling and
adult life. By learning the best comprehension strategies and how to best teach these
strategies to the pupils, the researcher hopes to provide the solid foundation needed to
succeed. Although the school's NAT result has met or exceeds its expectation, still the
researcher has a thought of a way to improve it. In reading class, the grade three pupil’s
scored84%, but the scores dropped in the 4th grade. So the researcher concludes that the
pupils score decreases because of the pupils have very poor higher - order thinking skills
to increase reading test scores and develop meaningful reading experience to the pupils.

IV. Identify the Problem in the Study:

As the researcher of this research, I have found out that many of my pupils in grade III
are able to read fluently, but still have difficulty in answering the "how" and "why"
questions. I am hoping that by incorporating higher order thinking skills my pupils would
be able to transfer and make connections to reading. This is important in order for a child
to be successful. I feel that incorporating reading strategies and showing students how to
reflect about what they have read, would improve their reading comprehension and to
become life-long learners. I am looking forward to working on this area of concern, and
sharing my findings with my co-teachers.

V. Identify the Action Taken in the Study:

The Metacomprehension Strategy Index had a total of 25 questions divided into three
parts that asked about the strategies pupils used to help them better understand the story.
Part I of MSI is consist of statement about the strategies used prior to reading a story, Part
II of the MSI consist of statement about the strategies used while reading a story, and the
part III of the MSI consist of statement about the strategies used after reading the story.
